Closter, NJ:
Costner-Brown Hudson
Costner-Brown Hudson-Ford, 395 Closter Dock Road, Closter, NJ. Built circa 1910, the Closter Garage as it's commonly referred to, was one of the earliest automobile garages, including parts, new and used car sales, and taxi service. Looking at the cars in the photo, it appears to have become Costner-Brown Hudson & Ford dealership in the teen's. In the right of the picture, you can see a sign in the trees. It's hard to tell, but it says Alpine, which is the town 2 miles East of Closter.

Costner/Brown Hudson
The Closter Garage later became McQuaid & Brown Motors, which was a Dodge dealership. A 11/12/1936 New York/ New Jersey newspaper ad and a 10/13/40 New York Times ad lists a Stagg's Garage as a Hudson dealership in Closter. My guess is that this was the same location under different ownership.

But long before both dealerships were around, the DCH service department site was the location of Brennan Motors, Montclair's Hudson dealer. Red Ball Garage, 142-156 East 31st St., New York, NY (Also sold Auburn.) (1930 Motor Trips Guide book)
The Red Ball Garage gained noteriety in the 1970's as being the starting place for at least one of the infamous Cannonball Runs - if you have not heard about those the idea was to get from New York City to Redondo Beach, CA, driving, as fast as you could. There were at least 4 of these "outlaw" road races - 1971, 1972, 1975 and 1979. Hudson and Essex cars were involved in transcontinental speed runs, so this is an interesting additional tidbit of information.

Lorbee Motors
Lorbee Motors, Inc., 171st and Broadway. Pictured are Lawrence Quirico on left and Roy D. Chapin, Jr. of Hudson on right. Dean Spinei reported in a March/April 1987 WTN article that, "Lorbee Motors was started in 1930 by the three Quirico brothers, my uncles. Lawrence was the Sales Manager, A. "till"was the Master Mechanic, and Dominick the General Manager. My father, Leo Spinei, joined the firm in 1948 as the parts and service manager. Lorbee had three locations all within a few blocks of New York's huge Medical Center complex, which was a major source of customers. The new car showroom was located at 171th Street and Broadway, storage for 25 new cars and used cars was on Tremont Avenue, and the parts & service was located on 167th Street." Ada, the daughter of Lawrence Quirico, responded to the article with, "Perhaps you might be interested in some of the history of Lorbee Motors and how it got its name. Well it all started back in 1929. Uncle Lawrence opened a repair shop on Jumel Place which was situated around the corner and about two blocks north of the garage. He worked there alone. At that time Atillio was working for Otis Elevator Company and Domenic ws working as a mechanic for [unknown] company. Lawrence had a friend called Charlie Boxcino who had a Hudson, Terraplane and Essex franchise. He and my Dad had some sort of working arrangement. In 1933 Mr. Boscino and Dad decided to form a partnership. They took the first 3 letters of Dad's first name (LOR) and the first letter of Mr. Boscino's surname (B) and added 2 EE's and lo and behold Lorbee Motors, Inc. was born. Business was not good in those days, as you can well imagine, depression time, but [Lawrence] held firm. After a while Mr. Boscino got discouraged and [Lawrence] bought his share of the franchise so there was [Lawrence] with a showroom and a repair shop. Enter Domenic. He took over the repair end of it and [Lawrence] ran the showroom and slowly business got a bit better, enough to ask Atillio to join the team. This was shortly before World War II. Then along came the war and there were no cars available to be sold and business came to a standstill. Domenic and Atillio wen to work for defense leaving Lawrence alone once more. He closed up the showroom and kept the garage going. He repaired cars and sold used cars until the war was over at which time Domenic and Attilio came back into the folds. After the war buisness boomed..." (Also seen in 11/13/38 New York Times ad and 10/13/40 New York Times ad.)

Wolcott, NY:
Wilmoth Motors
Wilmoth Motors, 74 New Hartford St., Wolcott, NY. Wilmoth Motors began on April 6, 1936 as Wilmoth and Younglove. A bankrupt Chevrolet garage provided the location for the address shown in photo. Wilmoth and Younglove began selling Hudsons and Terraplanes, and later added Mack Trucks to the lineup. Wilmoth bought out Younglove in 1942 around the same time the government put a freeze on any new car sales. When sales resumed, Wilmoth sold their new cars to the local customers as opposed to some dealers who sold their cars right at the Buffalo dock because of the high demand. Morrison "Bus" Wilmoth decided to sell his business to an employee, Cliff Parton, when he saw the 1955 models that resulted from the Hudson and Nash merger. "Bus" sold the building to a marketplace and Parton sold Hudsons from another location until 1956. This information was paraphrased from the Jan/Feb 1989 WTN. K & W Motors
K & W Motors, Inc., Raleigh, NC. 1953 photo shows C.K. Wishon, Sr., presidnet of K and W Motors, Inc., at left, and C.W. Margetts, Alexandria Zone Manager, at right. When asked why he values his Hudson franchise, Mr. Wishon says [in December 1953 Hudson Dealer News] he thought long and hard about the main reson he values his Hudson franchise because there were so many answers. He says, " First, Hudson has always built good cars and for years I've been able to give my many customers more than their dollars worth. That makes for happy customer relations and a large valuable repeat business. Second, my mechanics like working on Hudson. The men stay with me amd make money for both of us and today, more than ever, I've got to look to my service department for part of my living. Third, now that I've got the Jet, I'm taking a great many other makes in trade so I've been able to balance my sued car stock and my used cars are moving. Fourth, I have to live with my factory, and from what I'e been hearing from other make dealers, that can be rough. I've found teh Hudson factory human, sympathetic to my many problems, experienced enough to counsel with and gain some sound advice and not forever applying pressure. I order my cars as I want them, how I want them and that's just the way I get the cars."
